Reliance Arcade is a Grade II Listed covered market in Brixton, London. The market occupies a narrow site running between Brixton Road and Electric Lane. The Arcade is listed as one of three covered markets comprising the Brixton Village group of markets. It is the oldest of the three with the earliest part of the Arcade dating back to 1925. The primary reason for listing the Arcade is not due to its architectural significance, but the historic & cultural value the market brings to the local community of Brixton. Although privately owned the project was majority funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) represented Lambeth Council.
Internally, we sought to return the Arcade to its original 1930s appearance while bringing it up to modern building standards. The Electric lane faience façade was carefully restored and on Brixton Road, a shopfront fitted at ground level with new canopy signage and lighting added above.
